Paragliding: What’s It All About?

You may be looking at pictures of paragliding and thinking, ‘isn’t that parachuting?’ ‘what’s the difference between paragliding and hang gliding?’ ‘where does parasailing come into this?’, and these would all be legitimate questions.

Paragliding is strictly a recreational sport, involving a non-rigid fabric wing, originally designed to be launched by foot from the ground to aid the recovery of fallen military and space equipment. Pilots hold lines known as ‘brakes’ in each hand to control direction and speed, and use thermals to maintain height.

Parachuting, on the other hand, is a means of transportation from the sky to the earth using a fabric canopy to slow the gravitational descent (this is starting to sound like a science lesson, but bear with us!).

Parasailing is another recreational sport whereby a passenger is attached to a canopy and towed behind a boat; this activity is suitable for solo-flight as well as tandem since the passenger isn’t in control of direction, and is anchored to a point on the ground.

Paragliding with Experience Days

Hang Gliding is similar to paragliding in that the pilot would launch from a cliff or mountain, but the wing is a rigid structure connected to a frame rather than suspension lines.

Phew, who knew there were so many types of aerial sport? And that’s only four of them! Our focus in this article, however, is paragliding, a relatively new sport that’s only been around for the last 70 years or so.

Although paragliding was initially invented for business rather than pleasure, it has since exploded onto the recreational scene and become a huge travel destination activity, as well as a competitive sport. There’s even a Paragliding World Cup!

If your interest is piqued and you’re ready to give paragliding a go, read on and discover the many places you can join an expert pilot for an exciting tandem flight in South Africa.

Tandem Paragliding Flights: Western Cape

A quick Google search will immediately show you that the majority of tandem paragliding experiences in South Africa are in Western Cape, specifically along the coastline and in Cape Town. With towering mountains only steps from the ocean, the landscape and climate are perfect for paragliding and draws in thousands of hopeful fliers every year. There are numerous flying companies to choose from, but here are our top picks!

Icarus Paragliding are a dedicated team of instructors and enthusiasts based in Cape Town, Western Cape, offering tandem flying experiences and paragliding courses to the masses. Lead by a number of pilots with years of experience under their belts, Icarus is a great company for first-time fliers and those who want to get a taste of paragliding. As with most Cape Town paragliding companies, the flights take-off from either Lion’s Head or Signal Hill, allowing you unparalleled views of Sea Point, Green Point Park, and Three Anchor Bay. You may be thinking ‘Icarus? Isn’t he the guy who flew too close to the sun and fell into the ocean?’, but don’t let the name put you off, these guys are professionals!

With launch sites on Signal Hill and Lion’s Head, Skywings self-proclaim to provide the “best pictures of your tandem paragliding experience”, and we can vouch for that – we were lucky enough to join them for a flight in February 2018 (check out our video!). The pilots are incredibly friendly and are well-equipped to deal with first-time nerves (who, me?), and will happily point out any number of interesting landmarks below. Once you’ve landed at Sea Point, they kindly drive you back up the mountain and offer recommendations on what to do in Cape Town and the surrounding areas. This was an informative sightseeing experience as much as an aerial adventure!

Operating since 1999, Paragliding Adventures is the top paragliding school in Gauteng, with tandem flights, license training, and teambuilding activities all offered on site. Run by owner and SAHPA certified instructor Hendrik van Zyl, the company has gone from strength to strength as it leads the way in safety innovation and customer satisfaction. Paragliding Adventures uses a winch method to get passengers airborne, meaning it only takes a short run at the beginning to get up in the air. Did we also mention that tandem flights are only R500? That’s right, you can experience the thrill of paragliding for the same cost as a new pair of shoes. We know which we’d prefer…

The Paragliding World Cup

With every invention of a new sport, shortly follows the formulation of an official championship. How can we possibly enjoy a recreational activity if we’re not proving we’re better than others at it? Thus, the Paragliding World Cup was born.

The first competition took place in 1992 in Marlens, France, and has been gaining popularity ever since. The concept is fairly simple; a course is laid out (like a racetrack but in the sky), and competitors must try to finish the course in the fastest time, or at all, since many participants touch down before they reach the end line. Paragliding isn’t the best spectator sport, so GPS trackers confirm the route the pilot took and the time they did it in, and there you have it.

Unfortunately, a South African has never won the Paragliding World Cup, but Nevil Hulett of St Francis Bay, Eastern Cape, holds the world record for “straight distance to declared goal” which he broke with a distance of 255.6 miles. That’s 411.3km without touching the ground!
